Polish Spring Traditions in Slavic Village - Page 2
Wiosenne Tradycje March 20, 2011
The Spring Traditions continued with a performance by Piast of Obertas Op.19 by Henryk Wieniawski, the outstanding violinist from Lublin.
After burning Marzanna, Polish villagers introduce the Gaik. After Easter, young girls venture into the newly blooming woods and harvest a long, green tree branch to celebrate Gaik. Decorated with ribbons, feathers and colored egg shells, the branch becomes the star of a walking tour of the village. The girls go house-to-house singing joyfully of new life of spring coming to the village starting with the green branch.
The Pisanki dance began as a colorful dance with Piast girls dressed as colorful Easter eggs. Each region of Poland has its own style of eggs.
The girls are soon joined by young men complete with rooster caps.
Next came a performance of Polonez Warszawski by I.J.Paderewski Polish Language School of PWA students.
This was followed by a performance of Kukuleczka.
Next a young lady from the Paderewski Polish Language School recited the poem. Primia Aprilis (April First)
Then more traditional Polish folk songs were performed by the students (who really enjoyed the microphones!)
